The Schultz Brothers: An American Crime Saga (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798999864499)

A year after the Manhattan Bloodbath left Madison Avenue in ruins, Roman and Raymond-King Schultz are officially dead. They'd like to keep it that way.

Under new names in Los Angeles, the brothers have built quiet lives out of concealment. Roman has a house in Beverly Hills, a wife, and two teenage children. Ray has a boxing gym in Inglewood, a sparse loft in Koreatown, and a stray cat he refuses to name. It's not peace. But for men like them, it's close.

Then a smash-and-grab at a boutique jewelry store on Rodeo Drive goes violently wrong, and everything they crossed a continent to avoid comes looking for them. Drawn into the orbit of the shop's silent owner, Robert Luciano, a New Jersey power broker who trades equally in obligation and blood money, the brothers are pulled back into the life they had buried. What begins as a debt becomes servitude. What servitude becomes is a heist that could buy their freedom, or bury them for good.

Widowed Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Hammond, transferred to the Los Angeles field office after taking shrapnel in the Bloodbath, sees the pattern before anyone else does. To prove it, he turns to the one man alive who might know the dead men better than the Bureau does: Brian Wilkins. Suspended, hard-drinking, brilliant when he can keep his hands steady, and ruined in ways no disciplinary file can explain, Brian knew the Schultz brothers before they became ghosts. He knew them as boys, when there was still time to call them something else. But what Hammond doesn't know is that Brian helped make them ghosts. And for twelve years, he was the one who kept them free.

As the mob, the FBI, and loose ends old and new converge, Roman, Ray, and Brian are about to learn that the past isn't something you bury. It is something that waits. And it does not come back asking who you used to be. It comes back to collect what you became.

Sweeping, brutal, and devastating, The Schultz Brothers is a propulsive crime epic about brotherhood, betrayal, and the fatal American fantasy that men who live by violence also get to decide when it ends. A new series from the author of Made in America and The Bastard of Taylor's End. Print editions include an exclusive first look at Bears in Winter, the next volume in The Schultz Brothers(TM) series.
