The author was educated at a boarding school in southern England and Trinity College, Cambridge. For a number of years he played regularly for a top amateur football club, while working as a freelance journalist, teacher and writer in London. In 1963 he made his first teaching visit to Texas, where he obtained much of the background for his first novel, A Premature Affair, and its sequel, The Seymour Inheritance, an adventurous novel about betrayal, corruption, and obsession. He has travelled widely elsewhere, teaching in Germany the United States and Canada, and it was during these teaching assignments that he obtained experience and a wider understanding of school play productions, particularly Shakespeare, and the difficulties and exhilaration inherent in them. In 1982 he returned again to Texas with his wife and three children to teach and coach drama and soccer before settling in Somerset, England, to pursue his writing career.
