Tinsley Jenkins appears to have everything a young man could wish for: good health, good looks, an excellent education, promising career paths, a healthy trust fund, and a respected family. Tinsley's embarrassment is compounded by remembering that he was told by his father on more than one occasion that colleges were essentially day care centers that delayed growing pains for American teenagers, as well as providing an alibi for the parents that they have done their parental duty by putting their kids through college. Tinsley had always attributed his father's views to prejudice and arrogance. But now, it is the height of irony that all the talk by his father finally intersects with his thinking at this dramatic moment.
