The Social Worker in a Hospital Ward (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025997766)

"The Social Worker in a Hospital Ward" provides an insightful examination into the emerging profession of medical social work during the early 20th century. Elsie Wulkop offers a detailed study of the social worker's role in bridging the gap between clinical hospital care and the complex social realities of patients' lives. Through a series of case studies and analytical observations, the work explores how social factors-such as poverty, family dynamics, and living conditions-directly impact physical recovery and overall patient outcomes.

The book highlights the necessity of humanizing the medical environment, advocating for a holistic approach to health that extends beyond the physical ailment to include the psychological and environmental needs of the individual. Wulkop illustrates the daily challenges faced by social workers in navigating the high-pressure environment of the hospital ward, collaborating with physicians and nurses, and acting as a vital link to community resources. This text serves as a foundational document for understanding the history of social welfare and the evolution of patient-centered care. It remains an essential read for those interested in the history of medicine, social science, and the professionalization of hospital-based support services.
