The Steeping Hour: Warm hearths, slow brews and the quiet magic of starting anew (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798193963516)

She retired from monster hunting to open a tea shop.
Ninety-four days later, the System still hasn't accepted her resignation.

Wren Calder was a Vanguard, one of the best the Guild ever put in front of a door. Then a door failed, and Ansel died, and she stopped.

Now she owns a shopfront in Thistlewick. Eleven panes of glass with a crack across one of them, a cast-iron range that hasn't lit in two winters, and no stock at all. She has thirty-one shillings to her name and no intention of speaking to anybody.

The town has other ideas. So does the System.

Her combat class refuses to lapse. It is changing instead. A hunter's instincts are reshaping themselves into something she has no name for: an unnerving sense for leaf and water and heat, and for exactly what a person needs in a cup before they know it themselves.

She acquires a difficult regular who has never thanked anybody in her life and does not intend to start. A boy asleep in her coal shed with untrained magic and nowhere else to go. A blacksmith next door who mends things without being asked and refuses to be paid for any of it.

She also acquires a rival with a merchant guild behind her, a licensing inspector with a folder and a two hundred pound fine, and, under her own cellar floor, something old and sealed and no longer entirely asleep.

By midwinter the town will hold a festival, and the lease on every shopfront in the square will ride on a single cup of tea.

What you'll find inside:

• A retired warrior building something small on purpose
• A progression system pointed at craft, community and warmth instead of combat
• Notifications that never congratulate you and never explain themselves
• Found family that forms through showing up, not through speeches
• Real stakes: rent, frost, rivals, and something sleeping under the floor
• An old comrade who keeps writing, and a woman slowly learning to write back
• No explicit content, no gore, no grimdark. A comfort read that still has teeth

The Steeping Hour is the first book of The Thistlewick Chronicles, a cozy slice-of-life LitRPG series about dormant dungeons, small towns, and the people who keep the fires lit over them.

For readers of Travis Baldree's Legends & Lattes and T. J. Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea, and for anyone who has ever wanted the numbers to go up without somebody having to die for it.

Pour something hot. Pull up a chair. The kettle's already on.
