The Streets Forgot About Big D (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798190415315)

Epilogue - The Streets Never Loved You
The streets looked different now. Not because the buildings changed. Not because the corners disappeared. Because Big D finally saw them for what they really were. He sat alone on a worn wooden bench overlooking the foot bridge just before sunset. The city buzzed around him the way it always had. Cars rolled by. Kids laughed on the basketball court. The train rumbled in the distance. Life kept moving. It always did. Big D watched a group of teenagers standing on the same corner where he once made thousands of dollars without ever leaving the block. One of them reminded him of himself. Young. Fearless. Hungry. Certain that nothing bad would ever happen to him. Big D smiled sadly. He wished he could walk over there and tell that kid everything. Tell him about Frank. Tell him about the bullet that tore through his back and leg. Tell him about five years disappearing behind prison walls. Tell him about the nights staring at an empty apartment. About Rachelle. About watching the woman who became his peace slowly drift away because she grew tired of carrying fears that weren't hers. About sitting in court wondering whether another case would steal what little life he had left. About waking up in the middle of the night because your heart hurt-not from bullets, but from stress. But he knew it wouldn't matter. Nobody listened while they were winning. Life had to teach its own lessons. The streets had taught him all of his. His phone buzzed. It was a picture from his daughter. She was smiling. Simple. Beautiful. For a long moment Big D stared at it. He realized something. He had spent decades chasing respect from people who forgot him the moment he stopped making them money. Meanwhile, the people who truly mattered had been waiting for him to simply come home. He slipped the phone back into his pocket. The sun dropped lower, casting long shadows across the pavement. Big D stood slowly, his leg reminding him of Frank with every step. Some scars healed. Others became part of you. He took one last look at the neighborhood. The foot bridge. The corner store. The streets he once believed belonged to him. They never did. Nobody owned the streets. The streets borrowed people. Then returned them older. Or not at all. Big D pulled his jacket tighter and started walking. Not toward the corner. Not toward easy money. Not toward another deal. Just forward. For the first time in a long time, he wasn't trying to outrun his past. He was simply trying to outlive it. As the city lights flickered on one by one, the streets kept moving exactly as they always had. They didn't stop when Big D arrived. They wouldn't stop when he was gone. And finally... He was at peace with that.

"The streets never loved Big D. They simply needed him-until they didn't."
