He moved to New Mexico in 1916 where he worked on his brother's ranch, later graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1925. Once a reporter for the San Francisco Bulletin, he married the artist/etcher Alice Geneva Glasier (Gene Kloss) and moved to Taos, New Mexico in 1927.
