The Talking Stick (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798237434422)

The Talking Stick is a deeply emotional later-in-life love story set against the mountains, lakes, granite ledges, and quiet campsites of the Adirondacks-a story about two people who have already lived enough life to know that love is never simple, but may still be worth risking everything for.
Sam Mercer is fifty-four, rugged, capable, funny, and quietly romantic, with silver at his temples and the kind of steadiness that comes from having made mistakes and finally learning from them. Nora Bell is fifty-seven, warm, intelligent, independent, and carrying secrets she has spent decades learning how not to talk about. Neither of them is looking for some perfect fairytale. Both have already survived marriages, children, heartbreak, regret, disappointment, and the strange loneliness that can come when the life you planned no longer looks anything like the life you are living.
And yet, somehow, they keep finding each other.
First on Mount Marcy.
Then again near Lake Avalanche.
Then at campsites and trailheads where coincidence starts to feel suspiciously like fate.
At Lake Avalanche, Sam carves a fallen piece of wood into a simple talking stick. The rule is almost childish: whoever holds the stick gets to speak without interruption, without judgment, and without hiding behind jokes or half-truths. What begins as a playful ritual quickly becomes the most dangerous thing either of them has ever agreed to.
Because the person holding the stick has to tell the truth.
One confession leads to another.
A brutal divorce.
A child who stopped calling.
A son given up for adoption.
A father who disappeared emotionally long before he physically left.
A relationship that should have ended years sooner.
A mistake that changed a family forever.
A grief no one else fully understood.
And, mixed among the heartbreak, the hilarious disasters that make a life worth remembering: ruined dinners, disastrous camping trips, terrible decisions, awkward first dates, bad haircuts, old songs, freezing nights, and moments when laughter arrives at exactly the wrong time and saves them anyway.
Over twenty confession-centered chapters, Sam and Nora slowly reveal the people they used to be. Their "past lives" are not reincarnations, but the earlier versions of themselves they thought they had buried: frightened parents, angry spouses, lonely adults, stubborn survivors, people who sometimes hurt those they loved because they did not yet know how to stay.
The talking stick becomes more than a carved branch resting on granite.
It becomes a promise.
Listen before defending.
Tell the whole truth.
Never weaponize what the other person confesses.
And when things get hard, do not disappear.
But the real test comes when the Adirondacks can no longer protect them. It is easy to be honest beside a campfire beneath the stars. It is harder in kitchens, hospital waiting rooms, family arguments, weddings, ordinary Tuesdays, and moments when the person you love knows exactly where you are most fragile.
As Sam tries to repair his relationship with his adult son and Nora faces the most painful secret of her life, their romance becomes something deeper than attraction. It becomes a story about forgiveness, blended families, aging, second chances, and the terrifying courage required to let another person know everything-and stay anyway.
The Talking Stick is a moving, funny, heartbreaking, hopeful romance for readers who believe love after fifty can be more powerful precisely because it comes after loss.
It is not a story about two people being rescued.
It is a story about two imperfect people finally becoming brave enough to be known.
And discovering that forever is not a promise you make once.
Sometimes forever is simply choosing each other again tomorrow.
