Mary Ashmore Scobey was born in Lafayette County, Mississippi and proudly admits to having reached the stage of octogenarian. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Mississippi with majors in French and English. Mary then began a career of teaching and has been employed by the American Intercultural Student Exchange for the past thirty-two years. She and her husband reside in Cordova, Tennessee and have two children.
