Description
xIn 1942, Desmond Doss walked into a United States Army recruiting office and agreed to go to war. He refused to carry a gun.
His fellow soldiers threw boots at him while he prayed. His officers tried to have him discharged as mentally unfit. The Army itself threatened him with court-martial. None of it worked.
Three years later, on a blood-soaked clifftop in Okinawa, Japan, in the middle of the most ferocious ground battle in the Pacific War, Desmond Doss stayed behind alone when his entire unit was ordered to withdraw. Armed with nothing but a medical kit and a rope, he lowered wounded soldier after wounded soldier off the edge of the cliff to safety. He did this all night. He estimated he helped fifty men. The Army counted seventy-five.
Then he went back into the fight, was hit by grenade fragments in both legs, treated himself, continued working, was shot in the arm hours later, fashioned a splint from a rifle he found on the ground, and waited to be evacuated until every other wounded man had been taken first.
In 1945, President Harry S. Truman placed the Medal of Honor around his neck. Doss became the first conscientious objector in American history to receive it. Truman told him: 'I'm prouder to meet you than you are to meet me.'
THE UNARMED SOLDIER is the story of a man from a small house in Lynchburg, Virginia, who believed something so completely that no war, no insult, no threat, and no enemy could change it. It is the story of what faith looks like when it is tested by fire and asked to prove itself in the most unforgiving conditions imaginable.
It proved itself.
