"The Unfulfilled Mother" is the story of Ada, a woman in the 1940s - '50s who cannot find fulfillment in marriage and motherhood, and with each successive child, becomes more and more overwhelmed, so that she is unable to nurture her family. There is a lot of conflict as she becomes more and more estranged from her husband, a career Naval officer, who, unlike the children, can escape to sea. The story delves into her background where she herself was un-nurtured by her parents who worked day and night and left her responsible for a younger brother to whom she became totally devoted. She is bereft when he runs away to escape their dire existence and abusive father. He also leaves her best friend pregnant. It sounds like a soap opera, but it is based partly on real people. There is a surprise reunion at the end.

A teacher of writing and literature for 35 years, Donna DeLeo Bruno has loved books and relished reading for as far back as she can remember. Since retirement, she shares her immense enjoyment and keen appreciation of books and writing styles, with presentations at libraries, book clubs, and women's groups. Donna earned a BA in English from Rhode Island College, a MA equivalency from combined studies at the University of Rhode Island, Providence College, Salve Regina College, Roger Williams University, as well as a Critic Teacher's Certificate from Brown University (Extension), all in Rhode Island. A poet, essayist, and short story writer, she has been published in Goose River Press Anthology 22015 and 2016. In addition, she is a book reviewer for East Bay Newspapers (Rhode Island) and a contributor to The Providence Journal (RI), and The Sun-Sentinel (Florida) and The John Knox Village Gazette (Florida). She and her husband split their time between Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and their native Bristol, Rhode Island.
