Not happy with your body or at peace with your body or any of the other phrases that require ongoing effort and active generation of a positive feeling. Just at home. For most people, in contemporary Western culture, the honest answer to that question is: not recently. Or: occasionally, in specific circumstances. Or: I'm not sure I know what that would feel like, which is the most honest answer of all and the one that points most directly at what this book is about.

The culture has built an elaborate and effective management project around the human body. Clothed from infancy, trained before we can evaluate or consent to the training, most people arrive at adulthood as tourists in their own physical existence rather than residents. Managing the body rather than inhabiting it. Performing the body for an audience rather than living in it as a home. Consuming significant cognitive and emotional resources in the ongoing project of the body's presentation that would otherwise be available for the actual experience of being alive.

Nudism, practiced as a daily philosophy rather than as a vacation activity, is a specific and unusually direct technology for addressing this situation. Not because taking your clothes off is the point. Taking your clothes off is not the point. It is because the daily practice of removing the most literal layer of the management project creates the conditions in which the deeper layers can be examined and loosened over time, and because that loosening transfers into every other domain of life in ways that are quiet and cumulative and real.

This book is the philosophical synthesis of that argument. It traces nudism from the ground up, from its diagnosis of what is wrong with the ordinary human relationship with physical existence, through its practices and what those practices are actually for, through the transfer effect that carries body-as-home comfort into relationships and work and the quality of ordinary Tuesday moments, to the unified field theory that underlies all of it.

The quality of being actually here, in the actual body, in the actual moment, without the management layer interposing itself between the self and the direct experience of being alive.
