The Unmapped: A Novel of Hidden Villages, Buried Secrets, and Maps Meant to Lie (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798184610931)

A village erased from every map. A mother who died protecting it. A daughter who was meant to disappear with it.

Iris Calder reconstructs the truth of places for a living. A forensic cartographer in Edinburgh, she is the specialist they call when a boundary, a fire, or a grave refuses to match the record - and she has spent her whole career proving one quiet, dangerous thing: that empty ground is rarely as empty as the map claims.

Then her father dies, and leaves her a letter that unmakes her.

She was found, at four years old, at the foot of a Scots pine in a Perthshire forest - silent, alone, wrapped in a dead woman's coat, holding a hand-drawn map of a village called Kindail. A village that appears on no map of Scotland. That officially never existed.

As Iris follows her mother's map into the past, she uncovers a crime one powerful family kept buried for a hundred and fifty years - and the reason someone once tried to erase her along with it. To finish what her mother began, she must sit down across a table from the man who ordered her death, and decide how much of herself she is willing to risk to bring the lost back onto the record.

Atmospheric, haunting, and quietly devastating, The Unmapped is a literary crime novel for readers of Tana French, Ann Cleeves, and Jane Harper - the first in a series about the places a country agrees not to see, and the one woman who refuses to look away.
