Mary Magwood Causey and her husband always wanted a big family. They felt blessed by the Lord for their amazing children. Causey, like any proud mother, remembers the most important moments in the lives of her kids. She also remembers the agony she felt as she watched her son Richie struggle with addiction. As a mother, she wanted to do whatever she could to help her child. But Causey couldn't have expected or anticipated everything that would happen. Through it all, she learned how evil and destructive addiction truly is.
Causey details this emotional journey through vivid poems, biblical insight, and personal narrative. She describes both the good moments and the bad, examining the many facets of Richie's life that contributed to his addiction and ate away at both mother and child. Powerful and deeply personal, Causey's work explores and acknowledges the impossible battle her son fought every day.
Causey is an inspiration for anyone haunted by the same darkness. She hopes that The Unmerciful Thief will guide you forward and show you that with spiritual and optimistic imagery and insight, you'll see there is still so much light to welcome into your life.
Mary Magwood Causey was driven by her son's struggle with addiction to help those either suffering from substance abuse or watching someone else suffer from the insidious disease.
In addition to writing The Unmerciful Thief, Causey also is the author of The Sleepy Inlet. She graduated from the College of Charleston, where her poetry was recognized in the college's Miscellany literary journal.
Causey is a proud wife and mother. She attends LifePark Church in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Sewee Bay Church in Awendaw, South Carolina.
