The U.S. Medical Prison: How I Took Back My Health is not a textbook written from a distance. It is the lived testimony of a man who sat in a doctor's office at 310 pounds, heard the words "You have diabetes," and walked out with almost no explanation of what was happening inside his body.
No real food plan. No serious discussion of insulin resistance. No explanation of how high blood sugar damages the body. No warning about the path diabetes can take if nothing changes. Just medication, brief advice, and another follow-up appointment.
That marked the beginning of my fight.
This book is about type 2 diabetes, but it is also about something bigger: how chronic disease is often managed in the United States rather than truly explained. I believe millions of people are handed a diagnosis before they are ever taught what it means. They are told to "watch their sugar" without being taught how food, served in todays grocery stores, affects their blood, pancreas, liver, arteries, nerves, eyes, kidneys, and future.
Diabetes is not a minor inconvenience. It is a crisis within the body. It can damage blood vessels, destroy vision, injure nerves, harm the kidneys, increase heart risk, and slowly alter the course of a person's life. I know this firsthand. I watched diabetes harm people in my own family. I also lived with the weight, the fatigue, the cravings, the confusion, and the fear that come with not understanding what is happening.
But I refused to accept that management was the only future available to me.
Through years of research, discipline, dietary changes, hydration, walking, sleep, stress management, supplementation, lab monitoring, and daily commitment, I lost 130 pounds. My blood sugar and blood pressure improved. My body changed. My doctors may call it clinical remission. I call it reversal because I changed the course of the disease in my own body.
I am not a doctor, and this book does not constitute medical advice. I am not advising anyone to stop taking medication, ignore their physician, or forgo emergency care. If you take insulin, diabetes medication, blood pressure medication, psychiatric medication, blood thinners, or any prescription drug, you must work carefully with a qualified professional. Food and weight loss can quickly change your numbers, and medication may require medical supervision.
But I am telling you this: you have the right to understand your body.
You have the right to ask tougher questions. You have the right to review your lab results. You have the right to learn about insulin resistance, A1C, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, nutrient depletion, inflammation, sleep, stress, movement, processed foods, and the daily habits that may be feeding the disease.
This book explores the hidden causes of type 2 diabetes, the foods that harm, the foods that help, the nutrients many people lack, the roles of water and movement, the connection between stress and blood sugar, the importance of sleep, and the need for caution with medication and monitoring.
It is personal, direct, critical, and urgent because diabetes is a critical condition.
If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, this book was written for you. If you feel confused, dismissed, rushed, or trapped in a system that manages your numbers but never explains your condition in enough depth, this book will help you see the disease differently.
I wrote it because I needed the map years ago and no one handed it to me.
So I built one.
The U.S. Medical Prison: How I Took Back My Health is my story, my research, my warning, and my invitation to stop being passive about your health. What was built over the years can be changed. The body can respond when inputs change. The first step is understanding what diabetes really is - and deciding that your future deserves more than management.
