The Vampyre A Tale (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9789368092193)

The Vampyre: A Tale by John William Polidori, first published in 1819, is one of the earliest and most influential works of vampire fiction. The novella introduced the character of Lord Ruthven, a charismatic yet sinister aristocrat shaping the modern image of the vampire in literature. In the narrative, the protagonist, a young man named Aubrey, befriends Lord Ruthven, who seems to possess an alluring and supernatural charm. As the story unfolds, Aubrey begins to suspect that Ruthven is not merely a man but a vampire, and he witnesses the tragic consequences of Ruthven's predatory nature. The novella explores themes of danger and the supernatural, portraying the vampire as both a seductive and malevolent force that feeds on the life and vitality of others. The Vampyre was groundbreaking in its portrayal of the vampire as a suave, cultured, and predatory figure, a contrast to the monstrous and grotesque vampires that appeared in earlier folklore.
