The Wakefield Group in the Towneley Cycle (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026076460)

"The Wakefield Group in the Towneley Cycle" is a comprehensive scholarly examination of the distinct subset of plays within the famous Towneley cycle of medieval mystery dramas. This work investigates the unique literary and stylistic qualities of the plays attributed to the anonymous Wakefield Master. The study delves into the structural complexities, character development, and the innovative use of humor and social satire that distinguish these particular plays from other contemporary liturgical dramas.

The analysis provides a meticulous look at the origins and sources of the Wakefield plays, exploring their relationship to other cycles and their place within the broader landscape of Middle English literature. By focusing on works such as the celebrated "Second Shepherds' Play," the text highlights the master's ability to blend sacred themes with gritty, realistic depictions of 15th-century life. This study remains an essential resource for students and scholars of medieval drama, offering deep insights into the creative force behind some of the most enduring pieces of early English theater. Through its exploration of linguistic patterns and dramatic technique, the book illuminates the historical significance and artistic legacy of the Wakefield group.
