Bangor, Maine, native Curtis F. Jones served in the US Army in World War II and entered the State Department in 1946. Jones studied Arabic while in the army program at the University of Pennsylvania and resumed Arabic and Middle East studies when posted to Beirut, Lebanon. He has interpreted for three secretaries of state. Over the course of his career, Jones served in multiple Middle Eastern nations. His Washington assignments were as an intelligence analyst for Egypt and the Sudan, officer in charge of Egyptian and Sudanese affairs, and director of the State Department's Office of Intelligence for the Near East, North Africa, and South Asia. A recipient of the State Department's Superior Honor Award in 1967 and 1973, Jones retired in 1975. He has since taught classes on the Middle East, lectured, and acted as a consultant to the State Department on the Middle East and terrorism, and published Divide and Perish on the region.
