The Water Upstairs: Georgette Bauerdorf and a Murder Without an Answer (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189103148)

A door stood ajar. Water was running upstairs. The record never supplied the name that mattered most.

On October 12, 1944, twenty-year-old Georgette Elise Bauerdorf was found in the upstairs bathtub of her West Hollywood apartment at El Palacio. What followed became an unresolved Los Angeles homicide shaped by a disturbed scene, conflicting accounts, incomplete records, and decades of theories that often traveled farther than the evidence.

The Water Upstairs reconstructs Georgette's documented life before the headline: her family background, her independence, her work and friendships, her regular volunteer nights as a junior hostess at the Hollywood Canteen, and the trip she was preparing to take. It then follows her final public evening through the surviving timeline, including the people she encountered, the uncertain route home, the sounds reportedly heard inside the building, and the discovery that changed an ordinary apartment into a crime scene.

The investigation widened from the open door and running water to the bedroom, the reported forensic findings, the missing Oldsmobile, servicemen and social contacts, a false confession, and later claims that attempted to connect the case to other Los Angeles murders. Each lead is examined according to what the accessible public record can support-and what it cannot.

Rather than manufacture a solution, this historical true crime account keeps confirmed facts, contemporary reporting, allegation, interpretation, and speculation in their proper places. It addresses gaps in the surviving investigative and forensic record, the consequences of early scene alteration, and the difficulty of reconstructing a wartime social world built around rapid movement, informal contact, and incomplete documentation.

The book also examines how Georgette's case was absorbed into the shadow of the Black Dahlia story and other serial-offender theories. Chronology, geography, physical evidence, and public claims are separated carefully so that repetition is not mistaken for proof and a compelling theory is not presented as a legal conclusion.

Written in a restrained, victim-respectful narrative style, The Water Upstairs is for readers of historical true crime, cold case investigations, old Hollywood mysteries, and evidence-aware nonfiction. A detailed timeline, key-people glossary, and source index provide additional structure for readers who want to follow the case beyond the narrative.

The homicide remains without a publicly verified offender. This book does not promise the answer the record has never produced. It offers a careful account of Georgette Bauerdorf's life, her final documented hours, the investigation that followed, and the questions that remain.
