The Wisdom of Hildegard of Bingen: The Greening Power of the Divine (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798259371149)

The Wisdom of Hildegard of Bingen: The Greening Power of the Divine tells the story of one of the most extraordinary minds of the medieval world. Born in 1098 as the tenth child of a Rhineland noble family, Hildegard was given to the church as a living tithe and sealed behind the walls of an anchoress's cell before she reached adulthood. For three decades she lived in silence and obscurity, absorbing the rhythms of the Benedictine liturgy while experiencing visions of a living light that she shared with almost no one.

When she finally broke her silence at the age of forty-two, the result was a body of work unmatched in its range and ambition. Hildegard composed three major visionary works that mapped the structure of the cosmos and the moral architecture of the human soul. She wrote more than seventy liturgical compositions whose soaring melodies still move listeners nine centuries later. She produced treatises on medicine and natural philosophy, corresponded with popes and emperors, and undertook preaching tours across the Rhineland, denouncing corruption and calling the church to renewal.

At the center of her thought stands viriditas, the greening power of the divine - the life-force that courses through every plant, every body, every soul. The Wisdom of Hildegard of Bingen traces this vision from its roots in Hildegard's enclosed childhood through its flowering in her mature works, illuminating the coherence of a thinker who defies easy categorization.

Across its chapters, the book:

• Explores Hildegard's three major visionary works and their distinctive theology of creation, redemption, and cosmic order
• Examines her groundbreaking musical compositions and her understanding of sound as a structural principle of the universe
• Traces her medical and scientific writings and their integration of humoral theory with a theology of the body
• Reveals how she navigated the constraints on women's authority to become one of the most influential voices of the twelfth century
• Presents her concept of viriditas as the unifying thread connecting her cosmology, ethics, medicine, and art

Written for thoughtful readers, The Wisdom of Hildegard of Bingen: The Greening Power of the Divine offers a sustained encounter with a mind that experienced the world as radiant with meaning, alive with sacred energy, and ordered by a love that no institutional constraint could finally contain.
