Without the thin cloak of everyday life around them, they find themselves alone in the wilderness, trying to understand whether they are prey or predator. In "The Last Romance Of Jasper Conrad," Frances says to Jasper, "Just - just because I'm ordinary doesn't mean I can't have something more. I look around and I see my life and ..." But Frances isn't ordinary, and Jasper knows that. In "The Dying of Daniel," when Susan asks "... God, are we ever going to be normal?" Peter replies, "Normal? Normal just happens.... There's nothing you can do about it." But for Susan there is no normal, and there never has been. "Ordinary," "normal," "average: " these are words we use to protect ourselves. They keep our emotions, our imagination and our sensuality at bay. However, as the characters in The Woman In The Window discover, in the sleepless soul of 4 o'clock in the morning, these words are meaningless. Before WD called himself a writer, he worked at a number of different jobs -- from stacking lumber to interior design. He studied English at UBC and creative writing at ASU (where one of his teachers, Rita Dove, taught him the importance of the tale.) He has written for radio, magazines and newspapers, but never television. He's published both fiction and nonfiction in Great Britain and the US. He thinks he reads French passably, is working on his Dutch and speaks enough Spanish to get from A to B and find the toilet. He has interviewed John Cleese, Peter Ustinov, Margaret Drabble, Kenneth Branagh and enough other famous people to make him a hopeless name dropper. His not-so-secret passions are history and trivia, and he has never lost a game of Trivial Pursuit - although he did come 4th one drunken Quiz Night at the Uxbridge in Notting Hill, London. He lives on the Pacific Ocean -- but not close enough to see the water. So he spends his days writing a blog twice a week (www.wdfyfe.net) and working diligently on a novel, No Safe Harbors (a Dreyfus and Emily adventure.) It's a wonderful life, and he has only one regret: he can't type faster.
