The Woman Who Talked After Death is the story of a young woman who is brutally shot and survives in a "locked in" state yet speaks words unrelated to her surroundings. The Woman Who Talked After Death incorporates the motif of flooding, both as symbol of destruction and renewal, and directly through plot as a devastating flood drowns several nursing home patients and Sister Mary Beth. All of the flood victims' bodies, except Mirelle's, are found in the silt after the waters recede.

The novel's ending relates a scene in which a young man gives a ride to an unnamed woman who has come across a field. She is wearing only a short dress that looks like a hospital gown. He gives her his sweater, a pair of his niece's old sneakers, and his money before dropping her off at a bus station. His generosity surprises and unsettles him. Mirelle is more than symbol for the atrocities done to women. The novel dips into magic realism as Mirelle has survived. The final chapter consists of only a few words as a conscious Mirelle begins to retrieve memories of her childhood.
