Allan Cartwright was born in Rhodesia which later became Zimbabwe. On holidays he travelled to numerous places along the east coast of Africa and to inland game reserves. In the 1970's he sailed on yachts along the Mozambique and South African coasts. On one of these voyages they were caught in a cyclone and after being battered by a force twelve storm were eventually wrecked on the South African coast. He subsequently sailed on two trans-Atlantic voyages including the Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro yacht race. In 1978 he sailed from Saldanha bay near Cape Town to the Azores. He now lives in Northern Ireland with his wife and two daughters.
