The Wrong People Are Getting Rich

Why did companies like Sears, Montgomery Ward, J.C. Penney, Johnson & Johnson, and Hershey earn the trust of generations of customers, while others such as Enron, Wells Fargo, Purdue Pharma, and Union Carbide became symbols of corporate failure?

The difference was never simply intelligence, ambition, or the pursuit of profit. It was leadership and governance.

In The Wrong People Are Getting Rich, Russell Beck argues that modern business has gradually replaced stewardship with celebrity, short-term thinking, and personal enrichment.

Through engaging stories drawn from more than a century of business history, he examines the leaders who built enduring organizations-and those whose decisions undermined the very institutions they were entrusted to protect.

Rather than offering another collection of management theories or get-rich formulas, this book explores the character, judgment, and ethical principles that separate organizations that flourish for generations from those that collapse under the weight of greed, ego, and poor governance.

Drawing on his extensive executive leadership and firsthand experience in the nonprofit and corporate worlds, Beck presents a practical framework for evaluating leaders: Icons, Pirates, Non-Genius Bozos, and Snake Oil Salesmen. These memorable categories help readers understand not only why organizations succeed or fail, but also what kind of leadership creates lasting value.

Whether you are a business leader, entrepreneur, board member, student, investor, or simply someone who cares about the future of our institutions, The Wrong People Are Getting Rich offers a thoughtful and timely examination of the values that make organizations worthy of our trust.

The greatest leaders do more than build successful companies. They leave behind institutions that are stronger because they were there.
