Running water changed North American communities in similar ways, and they often used the same new tools to improve their supplies when these tools became available. The 1883 pump house and distribution system brought steep learning curves to Fredericton's Council, Fire Department, and new Water Department. Economic expansion arrived because of it, then this brought expansion of the water works. Then men of distinction applied new technologies to improve water quality and safety.
This is the continuing story of the little pump house on Smythe Street, and its connections to the past, technology and invention, to Fredericton citizens, and to the rest of the world. Fredericton received the most complete water treatment system in Canada, and was Canada's second municipality to receive continuous disinfection of its water supply.
This is part two of the history of Fredericton's water supply.
