After a series of devastating tragedies, twenty-eight-year-old Sylvia Obregon ventures to San Diego in search of a new life. She becomes a docent at the San Diego Old Town Historic Park and takes on the persona of Dolores Maguire, a woman Sylvia resembles from the 1800s who disappeared without a trace. Then, during her tours, Sylvia meets Tom Chamberlayne, a nineteenth-century ghost who loved the missing woman. Tom implores Sylvia to return to his time and help solve Dolores's murder. She refuses, but when dark circumstances make life unbearable, she agrees to travel back with him to 1867.
But, in post-Civil War San Diego, Sylvia is shocked and overwhelmed by the generally cruel treatment of the Native Americans and the local antagonistic behavior toward the freed slaves looking for a fresh start in the West. To muddle her world even further-she finds herself falling desperately in love with Tom.
In the vein of Diana Gaboldon's Outlanderbooks, Sylvia is caught in a time where hostile forces seem to lurk behind every corner. Will Sylvia be able to help Tom discover the truth about Dolores's murder? And can their newfound love survive the consequences of crossing through time?
