In 1980, Joyce Matthews is a teenager who is battling leukemia. Joyce enters Heaven, but God still has work for her to do. He sends her back to the physical world as a powerful spirit along with Gelos, the Greek god of laughter. Gradually she realizes that they have been sent forward in time fifty years, to 2030. The pair are sent to New York City and, through simple luck, find themselves working at a club for some of the wealthiest people on Earth. Joyce is gradually drawn into their world and watches while the sins of greed, lust and megalomania corrupt their lives. She becomes a witness as this group of plutocrats struggle against each other for the control of the world's economy, and learns about the power of sin and the influence of supernatural forces.
