Catherine, a graduate of Bryn Marr, translates French documents for the US State Department. She is sent to Paris ostensibly to work at the US Embassy. She is made a counterspy in a French town near the Swiss border. Catherine soon draws the notice of a devious German spy. Monroe's son, James Jefferson, known as JJ, joins New York's 15th Regiment without the knowledge of the Morris family. His regiment became the French 369th Infantry Regiment by white officers under French military authority. The novel follows all their adventures in the United States, England, France, and both on and over the Western Front.
