Together is a heartfelt picture book that helps young children understand illness, big emotions, and family change through gentle storytelling and warm, real artwork created by a mother and her children.
When a parent becomes unwell, it can be confusing and overwhelming for young children. Together offers a safe and reassuring way to begin those difficult conversations.
With simple, honest language and comforting illustrations, this book helps children make sense of illness, express their feelings, and feel supported through uncertainty. Inspired by real family experiences, it brings warmth, connection, and hope to a challenging time.
Perfect for families navigating cancer or serious illness, as well as educators, counsellors, and support workers, Together is a gentle tool to build emotional resilience and empathy in children aged 3-8.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a brain tumour, months of treatment meant time away from my young children for the first time in their lives. The separation, fear, and confusion deeply affected them, and our family had to find new ways to understand and cope with the big emotions that followed.
As we slowly healed, my children and I began to draw and to play out different scenarios together and we began to turn our experiences into a story, one that could help us make sense of what we'd been through. Together grew from there: a gentle, visual guide to the medical moments, tender conversations, and complex feelings families face during a parent's cancer diagnosis. May it help you, as it helped us, find language, connection, and light in a difficult chapter.
