Training the Dog: Ethological, Behavioral, and Pedagogical Foundations

Most dog training books teach you what to do. This one explains why it works, or why it doesn't.

Written for club instructors, professional trainers, and serious owners who've moved past the basics, this volume lays out the theoretical and scientific groundwork that most practical manuals only assume. It won't teach you to build a recall in twelve steps or fix a dog that pulls on the leash. It gives you the foundation those techniques are standing on, whether their authors know it or not.

Across eleven chapters, you'll work through:

• The real biology of domestication, and why the dog is not a "tamed wolf"
• How the canine brain learns, forgets, and consolidates memory
• The developmental windows that shape a dog for life, from gestation to old age
• How to read stress, calming signals, and pre-aggressive cues before they escalate
• A structured method for behavioral assessment: case history, observation, and the line between a training problem and a disorder
• Classical and operant conditioning, without the theoretical hand-waving
• How to build a training progression: shaping, chaining, the 3D rule, session design
• Why problem behaviors exist, and how to change them by function, not by force
• The relationship science behind trust, attachment, and a durable working bond
• How to teach the owner, not just the dog
• Where training ends and a veterinary or behavioral referral begins

This is the first volume in the Cynologie collection, LeCynoLab's professional imprint on the theory behind serious dog training work. If you already know how to hold a leash and you're ready to understand what's actually happening at the other end of it, start here.
