xThis book tracks the first 6 months of Donald Trump's Second Presidency starting on January 20, 2025. I wondered if the man knew the meaning of tariffs and the ripple-effects his outrageous percentages could have in the form of retaliatory tariffs.
Trump is unpredictable, throwing out rounded numbers like 10%, 15%, 50%, 125% and 150%. He acted as if other countries would just take it and not do anything by creating reciprocal tariffs. I wondered if the man understood tariffs, which always demands a "tit for tat." Donald Trump also ignored due process and due protocol as a president and resorted to using a ream of Executive Orders, instead of going through Congress, to command things like a dictator.
I am happy that, as a Canadian, I have Prime Minister Mark Carney to deal with President Trump's rude methods. Poor Vladimir Zelensky was bullied when he met the President in the Oval Office on February 28, 2025. He was flanked both by the President and Vice-president who did not want to hear what Zelensky had to say. They berated the poor man like he was a schoolboy. It was an embarrassing meeting between the heads of state.
When Mark Carney met the President, the President took control of the talk again. Mark Carney kept his cool though and spoke sparingly. He reserved his actions for meetings later with his Premiers of the Provinces and Territories in Canada. They met in Huntsville, Ontario between July 21 to 23, where they strategized how to protect Canada's sovereignty against Trump's continued allusions to Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States. The Canadian aim was to make the economy flow east and west instead of south.
Much of my book deals with Trump's tariffs and Canada's reaction. Trump has made similar threats to annexing Greenland and the Panama Canal. Since the book is like a diary about things in my own life and about Trump's threats against Canada, I've included the world's problems in Gaza, Iran and Ukraine and Russia as a context. We must remember how World War I started with the "Balkan Powder Keg" where people were leading their little lives in peace and then the whole world blew up in a global catastrophe of young lost lives.
Originally, I intended to write one book per year of Trump's Presidency. However, my energy is not indefatigable and so I said to myself, tracking 6 months of Trump's reign would be quite enough; that was all I could manage of the regal pronouncements of this pugnacious man and his politics. I knew I'd experience "Trump fatigued" with him spouting his dictums in the news every single day. You couldn't get away from it!
When Trump alluded to Canada becoming the 51ststate, everybody thought he was joking...but he wasn't. He echoed the Manifest Destiny of imperialism from 1820, also called the Monroe Doctrine to expand America over the whole continent. The hegemony of the United States was destined to extend "über alles," over all! Don't the Russians have a similar notion? Doesn't Islam have such an idea in a global caliphate? Canada seems to be too polite to have such ambitious notions!
