Truth From the Tree Fairy: Jataka Tale Rhymes (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798244339925)

At Jetavana, a well-meant tradition turns cruel. Villagers prepare feasts for the dead by taking the lives of goats and sheep, convinced the offering will reach departed loved ones. When the question reaches the Buddha, he answers with a story that cuts straight through good intentions and shows what a single ritual act can set in motion.

In the tale, a celebrated brahmin teacher orders a goat for a feast, and his pupils wash it, garland it, and lead it to the river. Then the goat does the impossible. He laughs like a pot smashing, then weeps with a grief that silences everyone, and he insists on speaking before the master himself. What follows is a chilling account of remembered lives, a reckoning counted in severed heads, and a mercy offered too late to cancel what has already been planted.

As the brahmin tries to spare the animal and guard it with his own hands, fate rushes in from a different direction, sudden as lightning on stone. A crowd gathers, fear and confusion rising, until a luminous presence appears above them to speak the truth in a single unforgettable warning. The result is not a tidy lesson but a turning point, one that reveals how compassion can arrive in the most unexpected voice, and how the cost of taking life reaches far beyond the moment of the blade.
