Twilight Sleep in America: The Truth about Painless Childbirth (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9780548186572)

Twilight Sleep in America: The Truth About Painless Childbirth is a non-fiction book written by A. Smith. The book explores the history and controversy surrounding the use of ""twilight sleep"" as a method of pain relief during childbirth in the early 20th century. The author delves into the medical and social factors that led to the widespread use of this technique, which involved the administration of a combination of drugs to induce a state of semi-consciousness in the mother. However, the book also highlights the negative effects of twilight sleep, including the loss of control and agency experienced by women during childbirth, as well as the potential harm caused by the drugs themselves. Through interviews with medical professionals and women who underwent twilight sleep, the author provides a comprehensive analysis of this controversial practice and its impact on the history of childbirth in America. Overall, Twilight Sleep in America is a thought-provoking examination of the intersection of medicine, gender, and society in the early 20th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
