When Both of You Have Different Brains
Most couples advice assumes both partners can hold a difficult conversation in real time, read each other's emotional cues, and repair a fight the same way. In AuDHD relationships, none of that is a given. When one or both of you have autism and ADHD, standard techniques often fail, and sometimes make things worse. The problem is not the two of you. The problem is that the methods were built for different nervous systems.
What This Book Offers
This book gives couples a practical, structured method adapted from the therapies that professional couples therapists use every day, recalibrated for how AuDHD nervous systems actually work under pressure. It draws on the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, and internal family systems informed relational work, and translates them into protocols you can use together, at three in the morning, without a therapist in the room.
A Different Approach
Rather than tip lists or one-sided accommodation guides, this book treats both partners as active participants. It distinguishes between meltdown, shutdown, RSD spiral, and sensory overload as four distinct states requiring four different responses. It covers the three most common configurations: both partners AuDHD, one AuDHD and one autistic or ADHD only, and AuDHD with a neurotypical partner. It includes six practical appendices, from communication scripts to a wallet-sized emergency card for the moment when words are no longer available.
This Book Is for Readers Who
have recently learned that one or both partners are AuDHD, autistic, or ADHD
have tried standard couples advice and found it did not fit their nervous systems
want a shared vocabulary for regulation, repair, and sensory difference
are in queer or non-heteronormative relationships and want a resource that centers them
are considering couples therapy and want to prepare for it, or are looking for tools between sessions
If you want a clear, structured guide to building a relationship that works with your nervous systems rather than against them, this book offers a place to begin. It will not turn you into a neurotypical couple. It will help you build a functional AuDHD partnership on its own terms.
