Two on a Tower (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798256149666)

Published in 1882, Two on a Tower is one of Thomas Hardy's most unique "Romances and Fantasies," famously setting the fragile, emotional lives of two human lovers against the vast, cold backdrop of the stellar universe. The story follows Lady Viviette Constantine, an unhappily married aristocrat trapped by social decorum, who finds solace in the company of Swithin St. Cleeve, a beautiful youth and aspiring astronomer ten years her junior. Together, from an ancient monument converted into an astronomical observatory, they chart the heavens and fall into a forbidden romance that defies Victorian constraints of class and age. As their secret bond deepens, a web of tragic ironies-including mistaken deaths, secret marriages, an unexpected legacy, and the heavy pressures of rural society-threatens to pull them apart. Ultimately, Hardy weaves a poignant tale of cosmic indifference and human passion, illustrating how the small, momentary trials of human hearts can feel infinitely larger than the grand mechanics of the galaxy.
