Understanding My Brain: Building a Life That Fits. (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781066947805)

A diagnosis can provide information about your brain, but it does not change who you are. Understanding how your brain works can help you understand yourself, recognise your needs and build a life that genuinely fits you.

Understanding My Brain: Building a Life That Fits is written for young people aged 14-18 who are autistic, have ADHD, identify with a PDA profile, or experience overlapping neurodevelopmental differences. Using clear, respectful and accessible language, Behaviour Specialist Mark Smyth explains how the brain influences emotions, attention, energy, behaviour and everyday experiences.

Rather than presenting neurodivergence as something that needs fixing, this book helps young people understand both their strengths and the situations they may find challenging. It explores why certain things can feel harder, even when someone knows what they are expected to do, and offers practical ways to communicate needs, establish boundaries and support mental wellbeing.

Inside, readers will discover:

- Accessible explanations of the brain and behaviour

- Why some everyday situations can feel unusually demanding

- Ways to recognise personal strengths, challenges and support needs

- Practical strategies for protecting energy and mental health

- How to make choices that work with the brain rather than against it

- Guidance to help brothers and sisters understand and provide support

Thoughtful, honest and reassuring, this book is designed to help neurodivergent teenagers develop greater self-understanding without shame or judgement. It is also a valuable resource for parents, siblings, teachers and professionals who want to better understand and support the young person in their lives.

Your brain is part of who you are. Understanding it can help you build a life in which you feel accepted, supported and able to belong.
