A native of Mississippi, Carolyn Cooper grew up in Yazoo City, the second of five children. Except for a three-year stint at the University of Virginia, where she earned a PhD in nursing, she has lived in North Carolina since 1966. She taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for fifteen years, during which time she authored The Art of Nursing: A Practical Introduction. Carolyn currently resides in a small community outside Chapel Hill with her life partner, Bill. They share three sons, two daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren. Untethered is Carolyn's first memoir.
