User Interaction Failures in Smart Buildings (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798195485771)

Smart buildings were envisioned as the pinnacle of modern engineering-structures capable of thinking, adapting, and optimizing themselves in real time. With the integration of advanced HVAC systems, intelligent lighting, IoT devices, and centralized Building Management Systems (BMS), the promise was clear: enhanced comfort, reduced energy consumption, and seamless user experience.

Yet, reality tells a different story.

Across commercial towers, hospitals, data centers, and residential developments, a recurring issue continues to surface-the human factor. Despite sophisticated technologies, buildings often fail to perform as intended because of how users interact with them. Occupants override thermostats, facility managers struggle with overly complex dashboards, and automated systems clash with human expectations. The result is inefficiency, discomfort, increased operational costs, and, in some cases, complete system failure.

This book explores a critical but often overlooked dimension of smart buildings: user interaction failures. It examines why even the most advanced systems break down at the interface between human behavior and machine logic. Drawing from real-world HVAC and MEP experiences, the book highlights the disconnect between design intent and operational reality.

Rather than focusing solely on technology, this work emphasizes a balanced approach-one that integrates engineering excellence with human-centric design. It aims to shift the conversation from "smart systems" to "usable and adaptive systems."

In an era where buildings are becoming increasingly automated, understanding how people interact with these systems is no longer optional-it is essential.
