Utilitarianism (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781169211094)

Utilitarianism is a philosophical treatise written by John Stuart Mill, first published in 1861. The book presents Mill's ethical theory of utilitarianism, which holds that actions should be evaluated based on their ability to produce the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people. Mill argues that this principle should be the basis for all moral decision-making, and that it can be used to guide individuals, governments, and societies in achieving the greatest good for the greatest number. The book is divided into five chapters, with the first chapter providing an overview of the utilitarian philosophy and its origins. The second chapter explores the concept of happiness and how it can be measured and evaluated. The third chapter discusses the role of justice in utilitarianism, while the fourth chapter examines the relationship between individual rights and the greater good. The final chapter addresses the criticisms of utilitarianism and offers responses to these objections.Utilitarianism is considered one of the most influential works in the field of ethics, and has been widely studied and debated since its publication. It has been praised for its clear and concise presentation of the utilitarian philosophy, as well as its relevance to contemporary moral issues. However, it has also been criticized for its emphasis on the collective good over individual rights, and for its failure to account for the complexity of human motivations and emotions. We are continually informed that Utility is an uncertain standard, which every different person interprets differently, and that there is no safety but in the immutable, ineffaceable, and unmistakable dictates of justice, which carry their evidence in themselves, and are independent of the fluctuations of opinion. One would suppose from this that on questions of justice there could be no controversy; that if we take that for our rule, its application to any given case could leave us in as little doubt as a mathematical demonstration. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
