Vigilantes (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026073544)

"Vigilantes" is a gripping historical account of the pursuit of justice in the lawless territories of the American West. Focusing on the gold-mining regions of Montana during the 1860s, the narrative delves into the chaotic atmosphere of Virginia City and Bannack, where road agents and outlaws thrived in the absence of established legal authority. At the center of this turmoil is the notorious Henry Plummer, a charismatic sheriff who secretly led a ruthless gang of criminals known as the 'Innocents.'

Author Hoffman Birney masterfully reconstructs the events that led a group of determined citizens to take the law into their own hands. Forming the Vigilance Committee, these pioneers embarked on a systematic campaign to rid the territory of terror and corruption. Through detailed storytelling, the book explores the moral complexities of frontier justice and the harsh realities of life in the gold camps. "Vigilantes" serves as an essential chronicle of the struggle for order in a burgeoning nation, providing a vivid window into the legends and realities of the Old West. It remains a foundational work for readers interested in Western Americana and the true stories behind the mythic frontier.
