Kay Alexander has spent most of her adult life working with children, including youth in crisis and has also counselled abused women. As a teenager she volunteered in the orphanages, worked as a camp counsellor and an assistant camp director during her summers and also worked with the elderly in a Senior citizens' home. One of the most amazing and equally disturbing facets in her working and volunteering experiences was the fact that many people who desired to help appeared to be "out of touch" about what their clients were experiencing emotionally. She became disconcerted by the ease at which victims of misfortune were often blamed for their predicaments and how we as a society can bury our proverbial "heads" in the sand and pretend that the problems, all the bad things, are not really happening. This book is Kay's way of telling the stories of real people and real events in their lives with the hope that you will read this book with an open mind, and then open your hearts to the abused, the unloved, and the neglected in our society. Some of the poems are based on experiences she has witnessed while others are recounts by the individuals or people who knew them.
