Voltaire: The Republic of Letters (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026075999)

"Voltaire" is a comprehensive biographical and critical study of one of the Enlightenment's most influential figures. Written by the distinguished author and poet Richard Aldington, this work delves into the life, philosophy, and immense literary output of Francois-Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire. The narrative traces his journey from a witty Parisian playwright and poet to a titan of the European intellectual landscape, whose advocacy for civil liberties, freedom of speech, and the separation of church and state reshaped modern thought.

Aldington offers a nuanced exploration of Voltaire's complex character, examining his sharp satire, his prolific correspondence, and his tireless fight against intolerance and injustice. This volume highlights the significance of major works such as "Candide" and his numerous philosophical treatises, positioning them within the broader context of the international community of intellectuals known as the Republic of Letters. By blending historical detail with insightful literary analysis, Aldington provides readers with a vivid portrait of a man who personified the spirit of rationalism and reform. This study remains a valuable resource for those interested in French literature, the history of philosophy, and the enduring legacy of the Enlightenment.
