Warts and Wax: A Kick Bollock Scramble-Art finishing six major films (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781067147235)

Warts and Wax: A Kick-Bollock-Scramble Behind the Paint on Six Major Film Sets is the book the practical-effects world almost never gets to write. The "Art of" and "Making Of" volumes lining bookshop shelves are written about the technicians who build the movies-by journalists and historians working from publicity stills and after-the-fact interviews. This is something rarer: a fully illustrated, 174-page memoir written and photographed from the bench itself by one of the artists who actually held the brush.

Robert Stannage is a UK scenic artist and fabricator with twenty years' screen-credited experience art-working on props, miniatures, vehicles, and set pieces. Drawing on a personal archive of over 200 exclusive reference and continuity photographs-his own, taken on the job and never intended for publicity-the book spans six of the most visually ambitious productions of the last decade: Blade Runner 2049, the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Prometheus, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins Returns, and The Legend of Tarzan.

Where official making-of books show the polish, Warts and Wax shows the workshop: concept art being physically translated onto miniatures and full-scale sets, often under brutal deadlines and worse working conditions, long before digital post-production smooths the result into the image audiences finally see. It is warts-and-all by design-candid about the industry's pressures and politics, but never bitter. The voice is conversational and often very funny; the craft knowledge underneath it is the kind that rarely survives in print at all, because the people who hold it are usually too busy working to write it down.

For film buffs, prop makers, scale modellers, and anyone fascinated by how the movies are really made, this is the view from behind the paint.
