West-Running Brook (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025400150)

"West-Running Brook" is a contemplative and masterful collection of poetry that explores the intersection of the natural world and the human spirit. The center-piece of the volume is the titular dialogue between a husband and wife who observe a stream flowing in a direction contrary to all others. This serves as a powerful metaphor for the individual's resistance against the universal current of time and entropy, a theme that resonates throughout the entire work.

In this collection, the author employs his signature rural New England settings to probe deep metaphysical questions. The verses range from brief, lyrical observations of flora and fauna to complex meditations on marriage, memory, and the stoic endurance of the human soul. The language is characterized by a deceptive simplicity and a rhythmic cadence that mirrors the conversational speech of the region while maintaining a rigorous formal structure.

As a significant contribution to 20th-century American literature, "West-Running Brook" highlights the tension between the physical landscape and the internal psyche. It remains an essential work for readers of modern poetry, offering timeless insights into the relationship between the self and the environment through some of the most enduring imagery in the American grain.
