Wheels and Radio Waves: Journeys with the Reads-School Buses, Radio Stations, and Everyday Wisdom (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798185064382)

In this richly detailed and heartwarming book, the ordinary rhythms of rural life become extraordinary through the eyes of Margaret Read-a devoted school bus driver-and her family. Against the backdrop of a small town's school bus fleet, built on the classic Ford B-Series chassis and cowl, Margaret's day-to-day experiences become a springboard for family conversations about safety, craftsmanship, and the unsung art of keeping children safe on the road.
But the story doesn't end at the bus yard. When Steve and Margaret Read gather with David, Jane, Thora, Minnie, and Beatrice, the conversations stretch from the American heartland to the far reaches of Japan. Steve's passion for radio leads to revealing discussions on mediumwave and shortwave stations in Japan, the staggering power of NHK transmitters, the transmitters of private Japanese-based radio stations and the storied legacy of the Matsushita/National/Panasonic corporation. With every gathering, the Reads discover how the structure-be it a bus chassis, a radio tower, or a family member-shapes the journey.
Wheels and Radio Waves follows Margaret Read through a season of school bus driving, where every route is a lesson in patience, responsibility, and community. Driving Blue Bird, Thomas, and Carpenter buses all built on the Ford B-Series chassis and cowl, Margaret knows that the backbone of any safe ride is the strength of what lies beneath. Her knowledge, coupled with the expertise of her husband Steve, expands beyond the buses to a world of radio signals, frequencies, and international broadcast lore.
As Margaret's workday ends, the action shifts to the family home of David, Jane, and Thora Read; where evening gatherings become forums for curiosity and learning. Steve regales the family with stories of Japan's radio giants-NHK's immense AM and shortwave broadcasts, the immense AM and shortwave broadcasts of private Japanese-based radio stations, the surprising power limits (or lack thereof), and the revolutionary influence of Matsushita (National/Panasonic) on electronics worldwide. Margaret draws analogies between the importance of a bus chassis and the foundations of trust, safety, and care that underpin every working system.
Through stories of buses, waves, and family bonds, Wheels and Waves celebrates the wisdom found in life's details-and the joy of sharing knowledge, across generations and across the world.
