When the Dragon Slept: A Physician's Secret War Against the First Han Emperor (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798235112438)

China, 206 BC. The Qin Dynasty is dying. The books have been burned. And a woman physician is the only person who knows how to read the empire's pulse.

Wei Shen has spent eleven years learning everything her father could teach her, which was everything he knew, which was more than anyone expected a physician's daughter to carry. She reads bodies the way other scholars read texts: fluently, precisely, with the trained attention that makes the invisible visible. She knows what the constitution of a dying empire looks like, because she has read Chunyu Yi's secret diagnosis of the Qin state, a one-hundred-year-old political case record written in the language of medicine and predicting collapse with terrifying accuracy.

When the Second Emperor asks her whether his father will live, she lies. It is the first and last lie she tells in a career organized around the principle that the truth is the only instrument worth trusting.

She walks out of Xianyang with her father's hidden medical archive under her arm and a city about to burn behind her. She arrives at the encampment of Liu Bang, the peasant rebel from Pei who is about to become the First Han Emperor, and she is given the job no one else wants: physician to an army with inadequate medicine, in a city that no longer exists, in the middle of the most decisive contest for power in the history of China.

What she discovers in the Ba Shang encampment is not simply war. It is a pattern she recognizes from the ancient texts: three officials dying of what looks like illness but is not, an unauthorized merchant with the hands of a bronze-worker, a future emperor with a constitutional weakness that his physician is managing incorrectly, and a political situation whose trajectory she can read as clearly as any pulse. She has the diagnosis. The question that will consume the next three years of her life is whether she has the right to act on it.

Drawing on the real medical texts of the Mawangdui excavation, the actual case records of the physician Chunyu Yi preserved in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, and the documented events of the Chu-Han Contention including the famous Hongmen Banquet, When the Dragon Slept is a novel about what it costs to hold the truth when the powerful need it to be otherwise, and what it means to practise medicine in the body of an empire that is learning whether it wants to live.

The dragon sleeps. The physician waits. Only one of them gets to choose what comes next.
