When the Elders Share Palm Wine: Wisdom, Fellowship, and Tradition in African Society (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798190436082)

Palm wine is more than a traditional drink. Across many African communities, it has served as a vessel of welcome, fellowship, prayer, marriage, reconciliation, leadership, work, and memory.

In When the Elders Share Palm Wine, Professor Jonathan Omenika David Sr. explores the rich social world surrounding the calabash. Beginning with the palm tree and the skilled work of the tapper, the book follows palm wine into the palaver hut, family compound, marketplace, farm, marriage ceremony, funeral gathering, leadership council, and meeting of reconciliation.

Through warm, reflective, and accessible storytelling, the book examines the roles of elders, women, young people, farmers, traders, spiritual leaders, and traditional authorities. It shows how the sharing of palm wine can communicate hospitality, gratitude, trust, acceptance, remembrance, and communal responsibility.

The book also confronts difficult questions. When does ceremony become excess? How can communities preserve tradition without permitting coercion, unsafe drinking, gender exclusion, exploitation, or environmental destruction? How can young people inherit cultural wisdom while still questioning practices that cause harm?

African-inspired epigraphs introduce each part and chapter, connecting the discussion to the reflective spirit of African oral tradition.

When the Elders Share Palm Wine is both a celebration and a thoughtful examination of African cultural life. It reminds readers that the true power of the calabash is not found in the amount it holds, but in the relationships, responsibilities, memories, and moral lessons shared around it.
