When the Rain Came: A Midlife Journey of Disruption, Rediscovery and Becoming Whole - by B. Kanana
She knows exactly what she's supposed to do. She just can't always make herself do it. And she's done pretending that isn't its own kind of crisis.
B. Kanana has built a life most people would call a success: a twenty-two-year marriage that survived two near-endings, a son she calls her favorite person on earth, a career built on grit and good instincts. She has also spent decades quietly failing to take care of the one person all of it depended on, herself.
When the Rain Came is the story of how that happened, told from a six-year-old's compound in Kenya where rest was never part of the curriculum, through a marriage nearly lost on a highway loop in Tyler, Texas, through a year of court-ordered silence that became the strangest gift of her adult life, and into the unglamorous, ongoing work of building habits that survive a bad week instead of requiring a perfect one.
This is not a book written from the mountaintop by someone who has it all figured out. It's written from the middle of the climb, by a woman currently in perimenopause, currently parenting a son from a distance, currently negotiating with the same old patterns she's been negotiating with for thirty years, and still, somehow, finding her way back to herself every time she loses the thread.
Inside, you'll find:

• The compound mornings that taught a generation of women their worth lived in their usefulness, and what it took to start unlearning that as an adult
• The marriage that nearly didn't survive, twice, and the specific, unglamorous things that rebuilt it
• A year of silence after a divorce that should have ended everything, and the surprising sushi lunch that began something new
• The psychology of why intelligent, capable women who know exactly what to do still struggle to do it, and what actually changes the pattern
• A practical, rain-proof approach to health and self-care built for real weeks, not perfect ones
• Honest, funny, occasionally uncomfortable chapters on perimenopause, anxiety, shame, and the particular exhaustion of being a woman who is good at everything except resting

Written with warmth, humor, and zero interest in pretending the work is ever finished, When the Rain Came is for any woman standing in her own kitchen at midnight, asking herself what's wrong with me, and ready to hear a different answer.
You are not the verdict. You are still becoming. Begin again, as many times as necessary.
