Once parents have determined what their academic objectives and values are, it is crucial to select a school that shares those goals and values. Ideally, school and parents should form a partnership, working together to help children learn, grow, and strive for personal success.
As school choice becomes more common, parents are faced with the increasingly complex decision of where to send their children. Even very young children spend up to 60 percent of their time traveling to or attending school, and the influence that learning environment has on them cannot be overstated.
This invaluable guide provides parents with the information they need to choose the best school for their children. After determining which qualities parents should look for in an educational institution, author and educator Marg De Roo, EdD, examines the benefits of each quality as well as the lasting impact each has on children. She has created a tool parents can use to analyze and compare schools.
Educational practices and beliefs are as diverse as our broad communities. With a matching set of values and priorities, the school and parents can focus on what is best for the children-and then look forward to a bright future.
Marg De Roo, EdD, holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University, as well as a master's degree in education from Indiana University. She has nearly thirty years of experience in the education field and has worked as a teacher, administrator, academic coach, and consultant. She is also the author of Leadership Journey through the Development and Transformation of Private Schools.
Dedicated to helping families and students to achieve their educational goals, Dr. De Roo has worked with families directly as well as through schools, districts, and state agencies in development of school-improvement programs that focus on instructional support and student learning. Currently, she is president of DRD Educational Impact in northwest Indiana, which specializes in academic coaching and consulting.
