Whispers Under the Silk Cotton Tree: Original Folklore and Poetry (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781069752802)

In the heart of Trinidad, where ancient whispers meet modern rhythms, folklore is more than just stories. They represent the ethnic and cultural heritage of the people. Whispers Under the Silk Cotton Tree invites you into a world where the familiar tales of Soucouyants, Douens, and Papa Bois are not just remembered, but reimagined.

Author Brian The Poet, winner of the International Impact Book Awards for his series Enslaved: A Chronicle of Resistance, brings his distinctive voice to these cherished legends. Each story pairs a compelling, contemporary retelling of a Trinidadian folk tale with an original poem. The stories twist and turn, offering fresh perspectives on themes of resistance, identity, and the enduring power of imagination. The accompanying poems distill the essence of each narrative, deepening its impact and inviting reflection.

Why do these stories matter now? Because folklore is a living art. It teaches us, challenges us, and connects us to the wisdom of our ancestors. In a world increasingly disconnected, these tales remind us of our roots, our resilience, and the vibrant, hybrid spirit of our culture.

This collection of stories is an act of reclamation. They are testament to the idea that our imaginations are uncolonized, our ancestral wisdom is vital, and our unique voices deserve to be heard.
